IL Given til February to Refund Sportsmen
January 6, 2009 In mid-December, the Governors Office of Management and Budget sent a letter to the US Fish and Wildlife Service indicating that the veto of $55M in spending in SB 1103 was, in part, based on their acknowledgment that federal law prohibited the spending of $9.25 M in dedicated sportsmen's funds that were swept in SB790. Further, they indicated they have drafted legislation to return those funds to the DNR for their intended use and will introduce it on January 12.
A response by the US Fish and Wildlife Service gives the state of Illinois until February 1st to return the 6 dedicated sportsmens funds (Pheasant Fund, Habitat Fund, Habitat Endowment Trust Fund, Wildlife and Fish Fund, Migratory Waterfowl Stamp Fund, and Fish and Wildlife Endowment Fund), with interest, or forfeit and estimated $16 Million annually in federal aid.
Pheasants Forever and other conservation organizations are working with key legislators to ensure this legislation is introduced and passed, but we need your help.
We encourage all sportsmen to contact their state legislators and ask them to support legislation to restore dedicated sportsmen accounts. Together we can make a difference.
